Positive Discourse: Caring for Patients With Communication Disabilities
Positive Discourse equips PAs with practical skills to ensure effective, patient-centered communication when caring for individuals who have speech, language, hearing, auditory-processing, or vision-related communication disabilities. Using case examples, prevalence data, and a five-step framework (“Communicate directly, Ask preferences, Adapt style, Be patient, Check understanding”), the course shows how simple adjustments (plain-language explanations, assistive-technology use, interpreter coordination, and culturally sensitive approaches) can reduce medical errors and improve patient satisfaction. Developed in partnership with clinicians and self-advocates, the content aligns with ADA requirements and AAPA competencies.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify the five major categories of communication disabilities and disorders
- Explain how these disabilities can alter information exchange during a clinical encounter
- Demonstrate at least three evidence-based adjustments that enhance communication with patients who have communication disabilities
