EHRs: Regulations, Opportunities & Risks for Clinicians and Healthcare Leaders

Health information technology and electronic health records (EHRs) are increasingly important to healthcare delivery and practice management. This activity will review the significance and potential benefits of EHRs to patients, clinicians, and healthcare leaders. Federal mandates and incentives for EHR use will be reviewed to understand electronic health system requirements related to compliance, risk mitigation, and incentive payments. An overview will be provided of EHR features, usability issues, and data limitations, that clinicians and healthcare leaders should understand. In addition, recommendations will be given to optimize EHRs to provide the greatest functionality and usability, with special attention to PA and NP-specific considerations.
