InNetwork CME - ESKAPE Under the Microscope: Treatment of Severe Nosocomial Bacterial Infections

Included in Plus and Premium Memberships!

AAPA’s InNetwork CME offers specialty spotlights on various topics, created for PAs, by PAs.

Antimicrobial resistance presents growing challenges to clinical practice. A group of pathogens known as the ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) have been recognized as the leading cause of nosocomial infections worldwide. This presentation will highlight the history of antibiotics including the evolution of antibiotic resistance and susceptibility testing. Additionally, it will examine each ESKAPE pathogen individually and dive into appropriate empiric antibiotic treatment regimens for the most severe nosocomial infections.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how antibiotic resistance occurs
  • Recall which bacteria are considered ESKAPE pathogens
  • Contrast the mechanism of action between different classes of antibiotic
  • Construct an appropriate empiric antibiotic regimen for various nosocomial infections
