Pain Management and Opioids: A Patient-Centered Approach

Healthcare providers who prescribe opioid analgesics have a responsibility to help ensure the safe and effective use of opioid analgesics. This educational initiative is intended for PAs involved in the care of patients with chronic pain, focuses on the safe and prescribing of opioid analgesics and meets the Opioid Analgesic REMS education requirements issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Learning Objectives


At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the origin(s) and types of pain as they relate to pain management and opioid use disorder (OUD)
  • Fully assess persons experiencing pain, including risk for OUD
  • Develop safe and effective pain management plans using nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic (non-opioid or opioid) options
  • Partner with patients to reduce risks when taking opioid therapy
