Learning Objectives


At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease with unique, distinct pathophysiology that contributes to adiposity, comorbidities, and complications
  • –Reflect on the medical and psychosocial implications of diagnosing a patient with obesity 
    –Identify the pathophysiologic mechanisms that contribute to the multifactorial etiology of obesity 
    –Review the common complications and comorbidities associated with obesity
  • Summarize long-term pharmacotherapy to manage obesity, including new and emerging pharmacologic agents based on efficacy and safety data
  • Develop individualized treatment plans for patients with obesity that incorporate evidence-based and clinical practice guidelines
  • –Integrate a comprehensive approach to nonpharmacologic interventions for obesity, including nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral interventions 
    –Recommend long-term pharmacotherapy based on patient characteristics, comorbidities, and goals
    –Analyze evidence regarding device and surgical interventions, considering pros and cons as well as utility and limitations
  • Establish practice infrastructure to care for patients with obesity
