Obesity: History & Physical Exam

This course will highlight the importance of screening for and diagnosing obesity. An obesity-specific history and head-to-toe physical exam will be reviewed in detail, as well as appropriate laboratory evaluations. Specific tools and questionnaires to take a complete weight history will be illustrated. The appropriate method to perform a weight circumference measurement will also be shown. Finally, staging systems for obesity to determine extent of disease and aggressiveness of treatment will be discussed.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Diagnose obesity and document the diagnosis in the medical record
  • Apply obesity-specific components to a history and physical exam
  • Identify a patient’s stage of obesity
