Serious Illness Management Toolkit: Being Gumby: Avoiding Provider Burnout by Building Resilience

Providing quality medical care can be challenging and at times difficult. Along with the challenges of patient care come the factors of busy clinic schedules, competing workplace needs, and balancing our personal lives at home. Numerous studies have shown the existence of the signs of 'burnout' among medical providers and the risks this brings to the care of our patients and ourselves. This activity aims to define both burnout and resilience, and to identify both individual skills and workplace factors that contribute to avoiding the former and embracing the later. This activity is a collaboration between AAPA and PAs in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (PAHPM).

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define provider burnout
  • Define resilience
  • Identify individual skills and workplace factors which contribute to both burnout and resilience
  • Identify tools and resources that actually work
