Current Approaches to Managing Insomnia in the Elderly Supplement

This monograph is a supplement to the JAAPA April 2019 issue and consists of four sections on the diagnosis and management of older patients with chronic insomnia.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Understand underlying mechanisms of systems that drive and maintain sleep.
  • Recognize, medical, psychiatric, pharmacologic, and environmental factors that contribute to chronic insomnia.
  • Identify the most appropriate first-line chronic insomnia therapies for individual elderly patients and second-and third-line treatments along with adjunctive measures, based on clinical recommendations.
