Obesity Leadership Edge: Module 6 - Bariatric Surgery and Weight-Loss Devices

Obesity is a chronic disease that results in multiple complications and yet is rarely addressed in a systematic way in healthcare. This module is six of seven designed to prepare PAs to effectively care for patients affected by obesity and is part of AAPA’s curriculum known as Obesity Leadership Edge.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Identify patients who are eligible for bariatric surgery or weight-loss devices.
  • Describe the range of available bariatric procedures and devices, including benefits and risks of each.
  • Perform required workup prior to making a referral for bariatric surgery.
  • Monitor patients after bariatric surgery, including special nutritional requirements.
