A group of pathogens known as the ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) have been recognized as the leading cause of nosocomial infections worldwide. This presentation will highlight the history of antibiotics including the evolution of antibiotic resistance and susceptibility testing. Additionally, it will examine each ESKAPE pathogen individually and dive into appropriate empiric antibiotic treatment regimens for the most severe nosocomial infections.
