Don’t Miss It: Common Oral Conditions Seen in Primary Care

Denise Rizzolo, PA-C, PhD; J. Leocadia Conlon, MPH, PA-C; Thomas Chiodo, DDS

There is a “silent epidemic” of dental and oral diseases in the U.S. affecting the most vulnerable of patients: the poor, the elderly, and many members of racial and ethnic minority groups that have limited or no access to dental care. Fewer than 2/3 of adults report having visited a dentist in the past 12 months and for every adult 19 years or older without medical insurance, there are three without dental insurance. Many oral conditions are often the first sign of an underlying systemic disease and the examination of the oral cavity is often overlooked or poorly performed. This activity outlines common oral pathology seen in primary care settings.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common oral pathologies
  • List common presentations, signs and symptoms of oral pathologies
  • Develop diagnosis and treatment strategies for oral pathologies
  • Decide when appropriate referral is warranted
